make thy castles high and fair,
Rising and reaching

Listen to the voices
in the upper air,
Nor lose they simple
faith in mysteries."

Royal Exchange, London (the 2nd one)
burnt 1838 - it has also been referred to as "The Oldest Sun Temple
in the world" by the late Canon Stanley; the Albert Hall,
London; the Great Exhibition (see note below); Hyde Park
1851; the Crystal
Palace; the Tower of Babel and the Coliseum. However, as the
brass bears little resemblance to any of these the identity of the
building remains uncertain. These 2 brasses differ slightly in the
position of the building with regard to the surround - the one on the left
has the building touching the border. There are also very old ones
showing a horse on the right and left of the steps in a border similar to 11-014
in Lions.

The Great
Exhibition
was a major international trade exhibition which was held in London in
1851. It was sponsored by Prince Albert, husband of Queen
Victoria. Housed in the Crystal Palace which was designed by Joseph
Paxton and built in Hyde Park, London and made entirely of glass and iron
apart from the floor and joists. Lasting 23 weeks the exhibition
attracted more than 6 million visitors to the 17,000 exhibitions.
Education and Science were promoted by the investments from the
profits. In 1936 the Crystal Palace burnt down after being
dismantled and moved to Sydenham. |
